Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town copyright expires in 2016

With the Christmas holiday just ten (10) weeks away, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today that the copyright interests in the holiday classic “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” expires next year, in 2016. Music publisher EMI had won a lower court ruling that its copyright n the holiday standard extended to 2029; the appellate court reversed that ruling and limited the copyright duration to next year. The determination of duration of a copyright is not always a matter of simple math; if you have questions regarding the duration of copyrights, please contact us. As a side note, IPC founder Greg Latham holds Bruce Springsteen’s rendition of “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” as his all-time favorite holiday song.
